London-based fashion designer has died of cancer

Catherine Walker, a French-born and London-based fashion designer has died of cancer. She was 65 years old.

Walker was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 1975 and underwent an operation in 1995. She also became one of the founding sponsors of Breast Cancer Haven.

A statement was released by her family. From the AFP:

"Catherine Walker overcame young widowhood and fought cancer twice with enduring bravery.

"She built one of the most successful British couture brands and at the same time raised a loving family. Catherine Walker has dressed many of the world's most beautiful women."

Aside from being credited as the designer who provided Diana's look of understated elegance, she was also good friends with the People's Princess. When Diana died in 1997, she was buried in a black dress designed by Walker.

Aside from Diana, Walker's other clients include Shakira Caine, Darcey Bussell, Joely Richardson and Queen Noor of Jordan.
